Why We Stopped Counting Stars (And started counting nothing at all)

There’s a particular kind of quiet that only happens above a certain altitude, on a clear night, a long way from the neareststreetlight. At McLaughlin Ridge, we’ve come to think of it less as an absence of noise and more as a presence in its own right — something you can actually feel settle over you after the first hour o-grid

THE MYTH OF "UNPLUGGING"

Everyone talks about digital detox like it’s a task to complete, another box to tick before you can relax properly. We’d gently push back on that. The point isn’t the absence of your phone. It’s what rushes in to fill the space it leaves behind — birdsong at  5am, the particular way granite holds the day’s heat long after sunset, a conversation that doesn’t have anywhere else to be.

HERITAGE LAND, HELD LOOSELY

This ridge has been cared for since 1886, long before anyone thought to build a cabin on it. We like to think our two tiny homes are just the latest, quietest chapter — not an imposition on the land, but a way of paying closer attention to it.

"The point isn't the absence of your phone. It's what rushes in to fill the space it leaves behind."

A SMALL RITUAL WORTH STEALING

Next time you’re here, try this: leave your watch in the cabin. Don’t check the time until you’re hungry, tired, or genuinely curious.
It’s a small thing, but it has a way of resetting what “productive” even means.
